My name is
Petros Gavalakis and I was born in Rethymnon, Crete, Greece
on the 12
th day of March, 1977.
Studies
I graduated High School back in 1994 and took the national exams in order to become an
engineer. I was admited in the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering of the
Technical University of Crete located in Chania, Crete.
On February 2000, I graduated from the
Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering
majoring in Telecommunications (Computer Systems, Software engineering and Telecommunication/Computer Networks).
My diploma thesis was in the area of Automatic Speech Recognition and the exact subject was
"Comparative study of smoothing techniques on parameter evaluation for DMHMM acoustic models", which was implemented as a module of the
(SRI) Decipher package.
After finishing my service for the national army and during the years 2001-2004 I
conducted research for the
Telecommunications Systems Lab, TUC
as a member of the
Speech Group.
During my post-graduate studies at the TUC I was a teaching assistant in classes like
"Analog Telecommunications Systems Lab".
On the 1
st of July 2004, I presented my master thesis on
"Clustering techniques at the subvector level for DMHMM acoustic models"
Since September 2003, I had also been attending the post-graduate class of the
Department of Production Engineering and Management, TUC
targeting to a master's degree on Operational Research Science. I finally presented my thesis in August 2006 on
"Flexible Manufacturing Systems Modeling and Analysis using Colored Petri Nets"
My main research interests include :

- Telecommunication Systems - Data Networks - Integrated Service Networks
- Internet/LAN Networking - UNIX Administration/Programming
- Web Applications
Work
I've been working for
Dialogos Speech Communications S.A.
as a full-time speech and application engineer since October 2000.

My list of hobbies - ocassionally - includes:
- Literature: Mainly greek novels
- Cinema
- Bicycling
- Photography
- Mini Soccer (5x5)
- Music: Greek rock/independent scene, mainstream rock and pop stuff and of course cretan folk music
